Which is better? a design-build firm, or a separate designer and builder for a home addition/remodel?

We are planning a renovation--remodeling the kitchen, tearing down a wall, redoing the entry way, and adding a family room--to make a "great room" (kitchen/family/dining). we are debating between a separate architect/designer, or a design-build combo....thoughts?
